The Bristol School Committee spent significant time on first readings of policy updates prompted by a special-education audit and routine housekeeping. The policies under review included expense authorization (DKC), records management and administrative procedures, property disposition, and language addressing per-diem and mileage reimbursements.
Administrators said the policy drafts are based on MSMA model language and noted a few areas require local input (for example, daily meal allotments and specific monetary thresholds). One board member suggested adding discretionary reimbursement language for unforeseen out-of-pocket expenses, and the superintendent agreed to accept suggested wording and incorporate it prior to second read.
Board members discussed whether certain items are district-level policies versus town-specific policies; administrators clarified that municipal school units adopt their own policies and the language can differ across towns even when addressing similar subjects.
The superintendent said any changes submitted before the second read will be highlighted when the policies return to the board for a vote. No policy was adopted at the meeting; members were asked to submit edits by email and will vote on the policies at a subsequent meeting.
