Mayor says Hawthorne will defend fair-share housing plan; settlement conference set for Oct. 1

Hawthorne Mayor Lane and the boroughattorney told the council on Sept. 17 that the borough has been served with two legal challenges to its fair-share housing element and will defend the plan.
Special counsel Michael Pasqual told the council that one complaint was filed by Fair Share Housing Corporation alleging methodological problems, and another was filed by a developer linked to the former pan-chemical property on Washington Avenue (the contract purchaser’s status was described as unclear). Pasqual said the borough conducted redevelopment studies, identified sites for reasonable redevelopment and will contest filings that it characterized as largely academic in nature. He said the borough plans to fight proposals that would allow excessive density on the former industrial parcel.
Pasqual announced a settlement conference scheduled for Oct. 1 before retired Judge Steven Hanssbury to try to move the cases toward compliance without litigation.
