Superintendent previews year two priorities: academics, student supports and family tools

John Thompson said the district is entering the second year of its three-year strategic plan and outlined five goals the district will emphasize this school year.
On academics, Thompson said the district will launch an AI-related tutoring program for K-2 students and will concentrate heavily on math and science instruction in middle and high schools. “We're launching an AI related tutoring program for our K2 students,” he said, calling it a step into a "brave new world." He added the district has researched the program and expects it to support rigor and student comprehension.
On student support, Thompson said the district will continue dignity-and-belonging work, including a continuation of last year's "n-word" campaign at all sites, and will sustain mental-health support through Daybreak and other resources. At the elementary level, he said Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) will be introduced.
Thompson said goal three addresses employees and professional growth through initiatives and continued partnership with labor partners. For families, he reiterated the newly available New Haven app designed to centralize attendance, grades and other information in one place for parents.
On operations, Thompson said the district begins the year in good financial shape despite state and federal budget fluctuations and announced the central kitchen's relocation to James Logan High School to improve food preparation and distribution.
