New Haven Unified superintendent outlines summer upgrades and delays on field projects

John Thompson, superintendent, said the district completed multiple summer facilities projects and is preparing additional Measure N and Measure M work as the school year begins. “IVCMS and CCMS were both repainted over the summer,” Thompson said, and fencing at Emanuel is finished while the maker space at Alvarado Elementary showed “significant progress.”
Thompson said the district is planning upgrades across sites, including replacing older HVAC units where feasible and reviewing communication and safety systems after a recent intercom upgrade at Hillview Crest. He said the Logan renovation design phase will begin this fall.
On athletic-field replacements, Thompson said the district is replacing fields at IVCMS and CCMS. “At CCMS, we have some good news. We received plan approval for that project and we are in the process of having selecting a contractor to complete that work and this work will get underway soon,” he said. By contrast, he described the IVCMS project as having encountered “several unexpected challenges in the approval process” and said staff do not yet have a completion timeline.
Thompson acknowledged frustration with the pace of approvals but said staff are working to move projects forward. He also reiterated that Measure N work is under way at multiple sites and additional Measure N and final Measure M projects remain planned for the coming months.
