Council introduces updated California Fire and WUI codes for public hearing

The Larkspur City Council on Oct. 15 introduced two ordinances to update the city'9s fire-safety regulations to the 2025 California Fire Code and the companion 2025 Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Code, and set public hearings to consider final adoption.
Central Marin Fire Authority Chief Ruben Martin explained that the state'9s updated model codes were published July 1, 2025, and that local fire-prevention officers across Marin reviewed the state text and recommended local amendments. "All the amendments that are being made to the 2025 California fire code that'9s before you today are the exact same amendments that are currently adopted within the Larks Municipal Code," Martin said, explaining that keeping the existing local amendments permitted the city to follow the state'9s adoption timeline.
Chief Martin also described the differences between the state'9s fire-hazard-severity-zone mapping and the WUI mapping used for building-construction and defensible-space requirements, noting that Larkspur adopted a proactive local very-high fire hazard severity area soon after the Oakland Hills fire and that local findings support stronger local controls where warranted.
Council voted to introduce ordinance 1092 (adopting the 2025 California Fire Code with local amendments) and ordinance 1093 (adopting the 2025 California WUI Code with local findings) and scheduled public hearings at a subsequent council meeting for final action.
