The West Chicago City Council voted Aug. 18 to create a nine-member temporary downtown revitalization commission to guide downtown redevelopment and community engagement.
Alderman Myers moved to approve ordinance 25-O-0039, which establishes a commission composed of three elected officials, three at-large residents, two business representatives and one additional stakeholder to work with staff and consultants on downtown planning. "I think it's pretty big deal," Myers said, urging attention to community input and continuity with existing consultant work.
Supporters said the commission will bring community members, business leaders and staff together early in the planning process so proposals are shaped with local input rather than presented as finished plans. Alderman Beebe told the council he favored a community-inclusive approach and cautioned that previous plans had sometimes stalled because of economic conditions.
The ordinance was read into the record and the council voted to adopt it on a roll-call vote; the motion carried unanimously. The mayor later asked staff to post an application online for residents interested in serving on the commission.
The commission is temporary and its duties, appointment process (mayoral appointments with council confirmation) and meeting schedule will be set in the ordinance and implementing guidance.
