Valley County approves setback variances for Sterling Landscaping at Highway 55

The Valley County Board of Commissioners approved a set of setback variances for Sterling Landscaping (CUP25‑031) at a March 23 meeting after staff presented the planning and zoning commission's unanimous recommendation.

The applicant sought reduced setbacks for parking and outside storage: a 30‑foot front setback for parking instead of the standard 100 feet, a 5‑foot side setback instead of 10 feet, a 55‑foot front setback for outside storage instead of 100 feet, and a 25‑foot rear (west) setback instead of 30 feet. Heric told commissioners the applicant withdrew proposals for permanent structures within the setback and that PNZ had held a properly noticed public hearing before recommending approval.
Chair moved to adopt the PNZ findings and to approve the variances as recommended; the motion was seconded and carried. One commissioner said they had "no problems with this, especially where there is no permanent structures that are being placed," noting concerns would have been greater if permanent buildings were proposed.
The applicant's representative was present to answer questions, and no substantive public opposition was recorded in the county meeting transcript. The decision adopts PNZ findings of fact and conclusions of law as the board's own.
