RSU 14: vocational program changes, SkillsUSA medals and robotics team headed to Worlds

District and vocational-program representatives told the RSU 14 board on March 18 that career-and-technical offerings are adapting and students have achieved competitive success.
Vocational center leaders reported they will split the cybersecurity sequence into two distinct programs — computer installation and repair technology, and computer information systems (the latter originally described as the cybersecurity sequence) — a change approved and expected to run next school year. The board also discussed a proposed reorganization of medical-occupations training into separate tracks (health services/health sciences; medical clinical assistant; and nursing assistant/CNA) pending state approval to give students narrower, career-focused pathways.
Superintendent and board members highlighted student competition results at SkillsUSA: Gabriella Wright won gold in nail care, Izzy Neal won gold in cosmetology and Bryce Jarvis took silver in firefighting. The superintendent also announced that the high school robotics team qualified for Worlds in St. Louis in April and said students will begin fundraising for travel costs.
Vocational meetings attracted substantial interest: presenters reported about 900 school-visit contacts from sending schools and described ProStart competition participation where culinary students performed well and many participants earned scholarships. PATHS seniors in biomedical and health science programs are currently in clinical placements and anticipate carrying college credits after graduation.
Board members were encouraged to visit Westbrook Regional Vocational Center and PATHS on May 5 during student instructional time so they can observe programs in session.
