Urbana staff report ongoing complaints work, outreach and resource gaps for people experiencing homelessness

At the March 17 meeting staff from the Office of Human Rights and Equity reported ongoing work to close two employment-race complaints and described outreach and office activities.
The officer said additional questions for respondents remained outstanding and that staff were seeking further information before completing those investigations. The officer also described an in-person inquiry from a resident who expressed frustration about the lack of resources for people who are unhoused but who fall just outside existing eligibility thresholds; staff said they encouraged the resident to contact service providers directly because the office does not have jurisdiction to change other agencies’ policies.
Staff listed internal projects including research into translation and interpretation services to address language barriers, budgeting, annual performance reviews and scheduling recruitment opportunities to boost commission outreach. Staff also reported a presentation at Clark Lindsay where Vice Chair Shelony Smith joined a discussion about the Office of Human Rights and Equity and commission roles.
What’s next: Staff will continue investigations and report back when respondent answers are received; outreach and research projects will proceed as planned.
