The Minnetonka Planning Commission on March 26 recommended City Council approve a conditional use permit and site plan review for a parking‑lot expansion on the Minnetonka High School campus that will add a net 14 parking spaces and an underground stormwater chamber system.
Planner Ingleson described the site as a half‑acre parcel the district bought in 2025 for parking expansion. Staff noted nearby steep slopes and wetlands were avoided, that about 29 trees (24 significant, five high‑priority) would be removed but that the removals remain a very small percentage of the 97‑acre campus, and that proposed stormwater chambers are designed to infiltrate with an elevated outlet for heavy storms.
School operations representatives said the district does not own parcels to the west and described coordination with the city on set‑backs and trail planning. Brent Bolter, the civil engineer, explained the stormwater chambers percolate to ground and overflow to storm sewer only during heavy events. Commissioners asked about pedestrian safety near steep slopes; staff and the district said retaining walls will be set back and include required railings and that the plan will be reviewed by public safety stakeholders.
Commissioners expressed support and voted to forward a recommendation of approval to City Council; the council will consider the item on April 13.
