Lynbrook trustees highlight student service, arts and athletics tied to district's "Profile of the Owl"

The Lynbrook Board of Education opened its Jan. 14 meeting by celebrating student achievements the district said exemplify its fourth "Profile of the Owl" pillar: global citizenship.

Dr. Lynch described expectations for "global citizenship," saying students should "build strong character through daily actions by demonstrating honesty, integrity and respect," and introduced Julia and Jake, who were honored for starting a junior Leo Club and organizing an eyeglass collection in their grandfather's memory.

The board also heard from Mr. Collins about the Burn Sideman Gallery's January exhibit, "Fragmented Icons," which featured pixelated drawings and paintings by students in Mr. Kunzes's and Mr. Lentini's classes. Mr. Collins described techniques students used, including advanced color mixing, brush control and raised surface elements to create texture.

Athletic programs were highlighted for community service as well as competitive results. Dr. Lynch noted the girls varsity tennis team finished 14-0 in conference play and raised more than $1,000 for its booster club; the girls volleyball team raised $800 for the Side Out Foundation during its Dig Pink game; and the football program held a Halloween benefit to support two local families facing pediatric cancer.

The board also recognized Sue Muller, identified in the meeting as the district's guidance chair, for selection to a New York State Master Counselor Program cohort, a statewide professional cohort that includes a stipend and mentoring responsibilities.

The recognitions were ceremonial; no formal policy changes resulted. The board moved on to committee business after presentations and public applause.
