Cheshire County superintendent to retire; commissioners form search panel

County staff said they circulated seven documents to support the search, including interview questions, a candidate scoring matrix, a sample press release and an ad used previously. An initial meeting of the search panel is scheduled for April 24 in the commissioners’ conference room and will be hybrid (Zoom available). The panel will include county commissioners, local law enforcement representative Ryan Conover (director of probation and parole), a superintendent from a neighboring county (Sean Coughlin of Sullivan County) and county DOC team members such as Becca Vancerk (clinical manager) and Dan Massie (assistant supervisor). Mike Thompson, director of operations, is also expected to serve on the panel.
Commissioners emphasized a transparent, scored interview process and said they will discuss whether a union representative should sit on the panel. Staff will circulate interview materials and handle ad placements and press outreach as planned.
Next steps: staff will convene the April 24 meeting, begin candidate outreach using the agreed ad and scoring matrix, and update the board as the process moves forward.
