Residents tell Homer Glen trustees Long Run Creek floods properties annually; village schedules workshop

During public comment Michael McGee, a Homer Glen homeowner, asked the village for help after describing recurring spring flooding on his property at 13540 Long View Drive from Long Run Creek and said neighbors in their 80s have been repeatedly affected.
Trustees, the village engineer and staff explained the village has limited authority off its borders, described past calls and litigation on the Cook County side of the creek, and said Cook County and township partners removed structures that impeded flow in some locations. Village staff said one case of encroachment remains in litigation and that some obstructions were removed after an earlier court process; they also described coordination with the EPA and Cook County on specific removal actions.
The engineer updated the board on a petition circulated by residents about the nearby BP pipeline: BP crews recently performed a maintenance dig near 139th Street and are conducting a depth-of-cover and pipe-location survey; village staff said they have not issued permits for tree clearing and that the pipeline's maintenance work was noninvasive. Trustees emphasized there has been no clear-cutting within village limits and cautioned petition signers about implying the village has approved tree removal.
In response to multiple resident concerns, the board announced a Long Run Creek informational workshop at the next regular meeting (March 25) to review what the village can and cannot do, jurisdictional boundaries, floodplain rules, and options for residents. The village said staff will post more information about the workshop and about how to participate.
Representative quote: "We will run through all of that — jurisdictional determinations, nationwide permits, floodplain — and that will be at the workshop next meeting on March 25th," the village engineer said.
