Sierra County board hears plan for three-year mobile ‘pop-up’ pharmacy pilot

The Sierra County Board of Supervisors was told the Area Agency on Aging Area 4 board approved a three-year pilot to test a mobile “pop-up” pharmacy that would travel east and west across the county to increase access to prescription medications.

A board member who serves as the agency chair said the pilot is intended to test feasibility and develop an operational plan; the item was approved by the regional board and advisory council and must be included in the Area 4 plan, which will be submitted to the state for final approval. "It will be a mobile pharmacy van that will travel the county, east and west side," the board member said, adding the project would seek funding and that other counties supported Sierra County as a pilot site.

Supervisors and staff discussed operational concerns including medication safety and security during transport. A fellow board member asked to confirm the service covers prescription medications, not illicit drugs; staff confirmed it does. "I think that's gonna be the biggest challenge is how to manage the safety of such a van that's driving around with medications," the board member said.

If the state approves the plan, county staff said they will bring a presentation to the board to outline staffing, security and funding details. The board did not take a formal vote on implementation at the meeting; staff emphasized the plan remains conditional on the state’s approval of the area plan and on subsequent feasibility work.
