County planner urges greater Historic Preservation Commission involvement as growth continues

Tony Ross, a Planning & Development staff member, told the Gordon County Historic Preservation Commission he is exploring ways to get the commission more involved in county projects, particularly given local growth and several ongoing or potential projects. Ross described his role and said staff would like to coordinate more closely with HPC on preservation-related issues.
Vice Chair Add Layson said he would like a joint meeting with the City Historic Preservation Commission to improve coordination. Chair Kenny Padgett suggested arranging a meeting with the county zoning board so the commission can better understand zoning procedures and identify areas where HPC can assist. Padgett also said he would email commission members the HPC by-laws and the Gordon County ordinance that pertains to the commission.
The commission did not take formal action to change its powers or adopt a new coordination protocol at the Jan. 5 meeting. Two procedural motions recorded during the session were the approval of the Nov. 3, 2025 minutes (moved by Jeff Henderson, seconded by Valerie Robbins, all voted aye) and the motion to adjourn at about 5:54 p.m. (moved by Jeff Henderson, seconded by Valerie Robbins, all voted aye).
If the commission pursues joint meetings or a formal relationship with zoning staff, future agendas may include requests for staff assignments or funding; those steps were not authorized at this meeting.
