Committee adopts ordinance tightening ethics training for appointed members

The Enterprise and Labor Relations Committee on Monday adopted an amendment to the city’s ethics education ordinance that requires appointed members of advisory boards, commissions and committees to complete ethics training within 90 days of appointment or reappointment.
Kima Blake, the city’s designated ethics officer, told the committee that current rules require initial training within six months of appointment and refresher training every four years, while many advisory bodies have two-year terms. “If approved, appointed members of bodies would be required to complete ethics education training within 90 days of being appointed or reappointed to a body,” Blake said, explaining the change aligns training with appointment and reappointment schedules by amending three sections of the ordinance.
Vice Chair Whiting thanked Blake and the clerk’s office for drafting the ordinance and noted several council members recently completed the city’s ethics training. Chair Linnea Palmasano opened and closed the public hearing after the clerk reported no members of the public had signed up to testify.
With no further discussion, Palmasano moved approval and the committee signified assent; the chair announced the motion carried. The ordinance change was adopted and the committee adjourned.
