Commissioners warn of a tight fire season, set a community wildfire meeting and outline road and maintenance priorities

Commissioners used the March 17 meeting to highlight wildfire preparedness and county operations. Commissioner Copener and others warned that dry, windy conditions and large fires in neighboring states are already drawing Colorado resources and could lead the county to implement a fire ban earlier than usual.
The board announced a community wildfire informational meeting on Tuesday, March 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the county location; the session will include the sheriff and the emergency manager to discuss control burns, agricultural burns, proper pile management and a county cleanup day for which tipping fees will be waived.
Commissioner Copener also reported on coordination with federal partners including work at Mesa Verde National Park, control burns by the Forest Service and BLM, and Road & Bridge operational plans: foremen provided quantities of gravel for this season and the department plans an estimated 30,000 tons of gravel for county roads, starting shouldering work next week on County Road G and work out at Road and Bridge.
Commissioners urged residents to be careful with fire, noted ballots for the city election should arrive soon and adjourned the meeting.
