Education committee hears $22,590 environmental education grant, before/after‑care RFP updates and QE project logistics

At the May 11 education committee meeting, district staff provided several informational items the committee will move forward to the full board for awareness, including a newly awarded environmental education grant, an RFP for before‑and‑after‑care, an enrollment update and a progress report on the Quaker Town Elementary (QE) project.
Dr. Hoffman reported the district received an environmental education grant for $22,590 and said the funds will buy hydroponic and solar kits for fourth and fifth grade classrooms. She said the award does not require formal board approval but that the grant paperwork needs Mr. O’Donnell’s signature before May 22 to secure the funds.
On before‑and‑after care, Dr. Hoffman said three bidders completed the full RFP process. The district’s rubric is being used to score proposals with the intention of bringing an award recommendation to the May board meeting. The RFP asked bidders to provide services at each elementary building rather than a centralized location and to offer potential enrichment or academic options in addition to supervised play.
Dr. Hoffman also gave an enrollment update and reminded parents that May 31 is the cutoff to guarantee kindergarten placement at a neighborhood school; registrations received after that date may be assigned to other buildings if sections are full.
On the QE project, staff said a project milestone was reached and that a new, parent‑facing FAQ is being compiled to address concerns about schedules, shared spaces and classroom assignments. Committee members asked for an early community announcement, open‑house planning in August once rooms are set, and for clarity on crossing‑guard coverage. Dr. Hoffman said shifting to elementary bell times should create an arrival window that allows redeployment of some crossing guards without increasing the budget, though recruiting remains a challenge.
A committee member also requested that future committee agendas include an explicit public‑comment section and that the record include a recording‑announcement; the committee agreed and then adjourned.
