UC Maker Space asks Cookeville council for help securing $1.67 million buildout at Cookeville Mall

Johnny Blae, executive director of UC Maker Space, addressed the Cookeville City Council during public comment on March 5 and asked for help and exposure as the nonprofit pursues a move into the Cookeville Mall.
Blae said UC Maker Space is a 501(c)(3) partnered with the Imagine Foundry (a children’s museum on South Willow Avenue) and that it was informed it must vacate its current space in July. He said the group has identified potential space within the Cookeville Mall and is working with local contractors (including JNS) on a buildout that he estimated at about $1.67 million. "If anybody's got it laying around, holler at me," Blae said, asking the council and public for in-kind donations, sponsorships of tools or spaces and introductions to potential funders.
Council members thanked Blae for the work and for highlighting the project. Blae said the maker space would support local entrepreneurs and youth and help keep people in the Upper Cumberland region by providing skills training and access to tools.
No formal council action was taken during the meeting on the request; Blae indicated prior conversations with the mayor and with city staff about assistance.
