Public commenter says APS reunion walkthrough rules, insurance and Facilitron fee discourage community access
Summary
At the March 17 Community Engagement Committee meeting, Janet Sers told board members that a Facilitron reservation process and a $1,000,000 liability‑insurance requirement — which she said would cost her about $75 — make informal class reunions and short tours of school buildings difficult and undermine outreach efforts.

Janet Sers told the Albuquerque Public Schools Community Engagement Committee that the district’s facility‑use process is creating a barrier to community connection.
“I’m having to use a program called Facilitron, which I find very confusing,” Sers said, and added that the district requires an applicant to carry a liability policy with “minimum limits of a million dollars” and to add APS as an additional insured. She said the insurance purchase would cost her “about $75” to allow her class to walk onto school grounds and briefly tour a remaining 1964 building at Del Norte. “I don’t think that is an encouragement for the community to connect,” she told the committee.
Mr. Gonzalez introduced Sers at the start of the public‑comment period; Chair Janella Stoga thanked her afterward. Committee members did not take a formal vote or direct immediate policy changes during the meeting. The committee’s agenda continued into a scheduled discussion of speaker request procedures and other outreach items.
The meeting packet and committee conversation later in the session centered on refining rules for outside presenters and clarifying when operational, campus‑specific matters should be redirected to the superintendent’s office — topics that could affect how facility requests and short campus visits are handled going forward.
The committee did not announce an immediate change to the facility‑use insurance requirement at this meeting. The public comment ended with Chair Stoga thanking Sers for attending.
