Carmel‑by‑the‑Sea begins geotechnical work on bluffs ahead of shoreline projects; evacuation drill set for May 30

City staff announced that geotechnical investigations will begin along the bluffs and scenic pathway to prepare for a series of erosion and shoreline projects, including work at the 8th Avenue sand ramp, the stairs and minor erosion repairs near 11th Street. "We're starting geotechnical work down there to prepare for the series of erosion and uh shoreline projects down there," the moderator said.
Staff also reminded residents that they will begin on‑site visits to multi‑unit residential buildings to assess apartment numbering and address methodology; Marissa, a city staff member, said the visits are not inspections. "They're not doing inspections. It's just a multi‑unit," Marissa said, and staff asked residents to greet visiting staff.
Emergency planning was another focus: staff reported a May 30 evacuation drill led by Chief Treyer and planned with Monterey County emergency management, county and city fire, the sheriff’s office, animal services and volunteers. Staff urged residents to sign up to participate and said information is posted on the police chief’s Facebook page and the city’s website.
Staff framed the geotechnical work as an early, data‑gathering step to inform project design and permitting; no construction schedule or funding breakdowns were presented at the meeting.
