Quincy School District technology and curriculum staff presented a multi-year plan to integrate artificial intelligence into instruction while emphasizing teacher training, student safety, and monitoring.
"We decided, hey, this has some use cases that could change outcomes of our students and we really need to embrace this rather than bury our heads in the sand," the district technology director said during the presentation, describing early training and policy work. Staff described three simultaneous efforts: educator training, development of policy and procedures to set guardrails for classroom use, and an AI-readiness framework for grade bands.
District staff described a recent family engagement event attended by roughly 150 people and reported that 87 percent of survey respondents said they would recommend the event. Microsoft conducted interviews and filming to highlight the district at a statewide launch; the district has applied for a Microsoft Elevate grant to deepen AI literacy work and plans to use potential grant funds for curriculum and literacy supports rather than immediately purchasing a single tool.
Presenters emphasized teacher-monitoring features when discussing student-facing AI tools. They noted that commonly available public chat platforms do not provide teachers access to students' full chat threads and said they are prioritizing platforms that give teachers a back-end view or provide district-level monitoring. Staff also said vendors such as OpenAI and Microsoft have offered free access to educators for a limited time, but the district will delay adoption until privacy, safety, and monitoring assurances meet district standards.
Board members and public attendees asked about mental-health risks and cases reported nationally where AI interactions were implicated in harm. District staff said counseling and mental-health work are not being delegated to AI and that classroom use will include critical-thinking training about AI's limitations.
The board heard that next steps include continued piloting, developing explicit grade-band curricula for AI literacy, and further community outreach. The district will report back to the board as pilots proceed.
