ABC Unified board hears midyear LCAP update showing modest benchmark gains and new pivots for English learners

ABC Unified presented a midyear Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) update at its Feb. 17 meeting, highlighting incremental academic gains and planned pivots to close gaps for long-term English learners.
Dr. Castro summarized year-two progress on the LCAP's three goals: academics, connectedness and college- and career-readiness. The district is reporting a midyear benchmark increase of roughly 3.4% in elementary ELA districtwide and singled out several schools with double-digit growth in specific metrics (one elementary showed 13% ELA growth; another showed 11% math growth). Graduation rates remained high and more students are meeting early college-readiness indicators.
On equity, staff flagged long-term English learners (students identified as EL for six or more years) as a priority group and described targeted pivots: more classroom walkthroughs focused on academic language use, expanded teacher professional learning, additional coaching, and tutoring at specific sites. "We're rolling out learning walks to our comprehensive high schools and adding tutoring and coaching supports," Dr. Castro said.
The board discussed next steps including summer programming planning, the rollout of restorative-practices training at secondary sites, and continued monitoring through benchmarks. The presentation was informational and no formal action was taken.
