The Fairfax County School Board on March 26 adopted a series of proclamations recognizing arts education, disability awareness and Transgender Visibility Day, and formally recognized recent regional and state championship teams.
The board read a proclamation celebrating arts education in the division and noting large participation numbers among students and arts educators. Chair Anderson presented the proclamation and invited students and staff forward for photographs with the board.
The board also approved a proclamation recognizing the month of disability awareness, emphasizing the division’s commitment to inclusion, access and equitable opportunities for students with disabilities. The proclamation referenced the principles of full participation, opportunity and civil-rights protections for students with disabilities.
On Transgender Visibility Day (March 31), the board approved a proclamation affirming support for transgender students and urging respectful, evidence-based approaches to foster safety and belonging. The proclamation cited research on mental health challenges in transgender youth and encouraged community dialogue and supports throughout the school year.
Board members paused the formal agenda to honor student athletic and academic teams, inviting state and regional champions from cross country, diving, basketball, rifle and science and technology programs to join the dais. Multiple school leaders and coaches were acknowledged for their roles in the teams’ achievements.
Members of the public who addressed the board during the community comment period amplified the themes in the proclamations. Several students and parents urged continued support for theater and performing-arts programs, saying the arts provide social-emotional benefits and build confidence. ‘‘El teatro me ha mostrado que tengo voz,’’ one student told the board, asking the trustees to restore canceled productions and technical support.
The meeting closed the agenda item by encouraging continued community partnerships and noting the proclamations will be posted with the board’s materials.
The board scheduled follow-up as needed, with the proclamations adopted as part of the evening’s consent and recognition agenda.
