Apache Junction finalizes pre‑qualified artist roster; staff readies traffic‑cabinet and veterans‑memorial selections

Staff and the commission reported the roster RFQ closed Jan. 15 and the list was finalized Feb. 19; of 39 applicants, 33 artists were placed on the roster and one applicant was later disqualified because the applicant was a relative of a city employee, staff said.
Diane, the commission’s consultant, said the roster contains only Arizona artists and includes a mix of emerging and established practitioners. "We had a really good panel going over everything very, very carefully," Diane said.
Commission staff said the roster is intended to eliminate repeat RFQs for smaller projects. "As projects come up, staff and other stakeholders will use the roster to match artists to the project," Erica (staff) told the commission, citing traffic‑cabinet vinyl wraps as a likely early use.
For a Veterans Memorial traffic cabinet, the commission said Council Member Johnson and local veterans provided the commission with their top three picks from the roster; staff will contact the first choice and move to the next if necessary. In addition to the Veterans Memorial cabinet, staff said four more cabinets are slated for vinyl wraps and the commission will convene panels to select artists for those projects.
Commissioners also noted the roster is available for developers to use when negotiating public‑art elements of private development. No formal action or vote was required at the meeting.
What’s next: staff will continue outreach to the veterans’ top choice for the Veterans Memorial cabinet and convene selection panels for upcoming cabinet wraps and other small projects.
