Grand Rapids board approves updated Portage County fire mutual-aid agreement

The Grand Rapids Town Board unanimously approved Resolution 2026-25 on Wednesday to update the Portage County Fire Service Agreement and reaffirm the town's role in county mutual aid.

Bob, speaking for the Grand Rapids Fire Department, told the board the update reflects changes in county departments and modernizes language. "We're willing to go and help other departments when they're called, and in return they will come to us when I call," Bob said, distinguishing day-to-day mutual-aid equipment requests from escalated mutual-aid box alarm responses.

The resolution was presented as an administrative update; the presenter said much of the language remained the same but had not been substantially revised in roughly 18 years. He explained that mutual aid can mean requesting a specific piece of equipment ("If it's a water rescue I might just need your boat"), whereas the mutual-aid box alarm system (MABAS) establishes regional preplanned alarm templates for larger incidents.

A motion to approve the resolution was made and seconded, and the board approved it by voice vote. No roll-call tally was recorded in the minutes excerpt.

The action implements a county-level mutual-aid understanding and positions Grand Rapids to continue sharing resources and responding to mutual-aid requests. The board did not amend the document during the meeting.

What happens next: the approved agreement will remain in force as the town's mutual-aid posture and will be followed by additional statewide MABAS-related documents that the fire department presenter said he planned to bring to the board for future consideration.
