Dunedin honors community groups, scholarships and 1966 state‑champion basketball team

At its March 19 meeting the Dunedin City Commission hosted multiple community recognitions.
Visitors from Clearwater returned a Mayor’s Challenge trophy and Mayor Bruce Recctor spoke about the economic and cultural benefits of spring training to both cities. Commissioner Samberen and others noted the regional boost to restaurants and downtown activity when the Phillies or Blue Jays play.
Commissioner Tom Duggard presented a proclamation declaring March 28, 2026, as Paint Dunedin Purple Day to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. Bren Cuni, a planning committee member and local business owner, described Paint Dunedin Purple’s growth (more than 80 businesses participated in 2025) and outlined a week of events, including a zombie pub crawl, pickleball tournament, drag-queen bingo and other fundraisers.
The commission also recognized CFY (Clearwater For Youth / Penillis) scholarship recipients. Kevin Dunar, CFY executive director, described 57 awards this year across multiple scholarship tracks (15 × $10,000, 11 × $5,000, 18 associate-degree slots covered through a college partnership, and vocational/trade scholarships sponsored by Duke Energy) and introduced local recipients Logan McLemore and Grayson Frankie.
Later in the meeting, city staff and former players celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Dunedin High School boys’ 1966 state basketball championship, with long‑time community members recounting the team’s run and the city presenting the original banner and photos.
