An animal control representative told the Desert Hot Springs Public Safety Commission on May 8 that in April 2025 the department completed 201 service requests, processed 56 intakes, returned 20 animals to owners, adopted out six animals, sent nine to rescues, and handled 31 dead-on-arrivals; one animal died in care and five were euthanized. The speaker highlighted six abandoned husky puppies taken in poor health, flown to a Humane Society in Tahoe at no cost to the city, and later adopted.
The code compliance report said the department completed 90 service requests and 298 inspections in April, issued 56 notices of violation and 18 citations totaling $24,600. Staff introduced new hire Randy Towner and credited officers Michael Miller, Linda Humeman and AVA officer Pam Chaffen for recent cleanups, a long-standing case closure, and removal of two inoperable vehicles using the AVA program with county reimbursement.
Commissioners asked whether animal vaccination clinics are recurring; staff said clinics occur when sponsoring groups bring a snip bus and depend on sponsorship. On a recently cleared lot on Hosienda, staff said a notice of violation led the owner to clean up and apply a chemical stabilizer to meet AQMD dust-control conditions before further development.
