The West Hollywood City Council approved a package of activations and events tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, authorizing staff to execute production contracts for fan-zone programming and related arts performances.
Staff said the city will host multi-day fan-zone activations: a larger activation at West Hollywood Park expected to draw up to about 2,500 attendees on its busiest days, and a smaller, family-focused activation at Plumber Park. The administration recommended a $250,000 production-services agreement to cover planning and event production — including large viewing screens, seating, shade structures, marketing and sponsorship recruitment — and a separate $275,000 allocation to present Disco Foot, a choreographed performance group traveling from France that will rehearse and perform with 24 local professional dancers for up to four one-hour performances during the activations.
Councilmembers focused on scale, outreach to local businesses and how to coordinate alcohol sales so parks activations do not unintentionally undercut surrounding restaurants and bars. Laura Byrie, director of economic development, said staff will pursue business outreach and consider options such as vendor booths for local establishments, and that a limited beer-garden activation could be accommodated within the current budget but would require operational details and possibly ordinance-level entertainment-district approvals for repeatable daytime/evening alcohol service.
Vice Mayor Hang, Councilmember Buyers and others said the activations present an opportunity to showcase West Hollywood ahead of the 2028 Olympics and to involve local businesses; Councilmember Meister urged staff to ensure budgets are sufficient to deliver a high-quality production. The council voted to approve the staff recommendations and gave staff direction to return with details if additional funds or regulatory steps are required.
Staff will continue outreach to hotel partners, the LA host committee and local businesses to coordinate room blocks, hospitality partnerships and transit-friendly promotions, and will return to council with implementation specifics and any requests for supplemental budget authority.
