New Canaan’s Charter Revision Commission voted March 31 to keep the Board of Finance an appointed body, rejecting a proposal to make it elected.
Supporters of the appointed model argued the Board of Finance’s work is highly technical and is most effective when members are chosen for expertise. Commissioner Chris Labrecque framed the question as one of structure and function: appointed boards, he said, provide continuity for detailed budget review rather than direct electoral competition.
Opponents urged electoral accountability. Several commissioners noted that many neighboring towns elect their finance boards and argued a vote could give the public a clearer line of responsibility on tax and budget questions.
The motion to retain an appointed Board of Finance carried on a roll call with eight members voting in favor and three opposed. The commission recorded votes individually during the meeting.
Ending: The commission will incorporate the decision to keep the Board of Finance appointed into its draft charter report and move on to other articles in April.
