Holland Hospital asks for $1.7M to add advanced endoscopy room to reduce patient transfers

State Representative Nancy Dbor presented a $1.7 million grant request for Holland Hospital to build out a fourth procedure room in its endoscopy suite and equip it for advanced endoscopy, which hospital leaders say can treat disease with less invasive techniques and avoid surgery.
Mark Pollock, president of Holland Hospital, and Joe Banello, the hospital’s chief clinical officer, told the committee the hospital is a nonprofit serving Ottawa and Allegan counties and that the additional room would convert existing shell space into a fully equipped advanced endoscopy room. Banello said Holland Hospital currently transfers about 600 patients a year for advanced endoscopy procedures to Grand Rapids and that the expansion would add 6–8 nurses and support staff and expand local access to minimally invasive treatments.
Committee members asked about annual patient volumes, workforce impacts and whether the $1.7 million would finish the project; hospital officials said the 1.7M would cover the bulk of the work but that total project costs may be slightly higher and the hospital would contribute additional funds.
