Habitat for Humanity Jackson seeks $1.5M for cooperative and transitional housing in Jackson County

Rep. Schmaltz presented a $1.5 million request to support Greater Jackson Habitat for Humanity and a partnership with the Welcome Home organization to construct new homes and cooperative housing under a 20×28 initiative aimed at expanding affordable homeownership and transitional housing.
Victoria Gmerson Overmyer, representing Welcome Home and Habitat for Humanity Jackson, said the program will produce homeownership opportunities for low‑ and moderate‑income working families, veterans and youth transitioning out of foster care. She said Habitat leverages public funding with private donations, volunteer labor and homeowner sweat equity.
Witnesses outlined the funding split: approximately $1.1 million to fund Habitat’s 20×28 construction plan and roughly $450,000 for Welcome Home to close gap funding for four cooperative/transitional homes. They said the city of Jackson had awarded an RFP for four homes and that each house costs about $195,000 to build, with the city providing $140,000 per home toward that cost.
Committee members asked for clarification on the uses of the requested funds and acknowledged strong local partnerships; there was no vote during the hearing.
