Commission approves small roof vent at 89 Avenue

The Springfield City Historical Commission on a voice vote approved a certificate of appropriateness for a 12-inch black roof vent at 89 Avenue after finding it would be minimally visible from the public way.

Chair Al Nardi opened the public hearing and read staff’s overview, saying the petitioner had applied for a certificate to install a small roof vent. The contractor who spoke for the project, identifying the work as a ventilation upgrade, told the commission the vent would be installed near the chimney and would be largely hidden from public view.

Commissioners examined photos the petitioner displayed and had technical questions about placement and visibility. "It's very small and it's going to be going up. It's for insulation purposes just to make sure it vented well through the town," the contractor said, explaining the functional need. Commissioners concluded the proposed location—toward the rear ridge line and away from the street—limited public visibility.

There were no speakers from the public who opposed or spoke in favor during the hearing. After brief discussion, a commissioner moved to approve the application as presented; the motion carried with all voting members present recording 'yes.'

The approval is limited to the vent as presented; commissioners noted that if the vent specification or color changes the petitioner should notify staff to determine whether the change requires a new filing or further review. The commission closed the matter and moved to the next agenda item.
