Glynn County recreation officials report more than 1,800 youth in spring ball; beaches near fully staffed for summer lifeguards

Glynn County’s Recreation and Parks department says more than 1,800 children are registered for spring leagues and programs and that the county is preparing a series of community events and safety measures ahead of the summer season.
Lisa Gorganis, Glynn County’s recreation and parks director, told Good News Glenn that registrations cover T-ball, blast ball, soccer, baseball and softball and that more than 100 volunteers coach teams. "We register in January for that and now spring is here and 1,800 plus young people in Glynn County are out in our parks playing all those sports," Gorganis said.
Gorganis said the county’s opening-day ceremony and parade at Mallalerie Park is set for March 28 and that the parks department will host a free outdoor movie at Seldon Park the same night with gates opening about 7 p.m. and the movie beginning near sundown.
She described capital and amenity projects underway: Ballard Park is receiving fence replacement, batting cages and a dog park expected to open by the end of spring; Seldon Park will get roughly 4,000 linear feet of walking trail and seven interpretive sign panels focused on the park’s history and community stories.
On safety and staffing, Gorganis said lifeguard hiring is nearly complete as of the March 11 recording — 21 lifeguards hired with 16 returning — and pools are hiring site attendants to prepare for pool openings targeted for May 23. The county will run weekend sandbar patrols in April (UTV-based scanning with lifeguards and police assisting) to spot visitors who may be out beyond safe sandbars as tides change rapidly.
What’s next: Gorganis encouraged community attendance at Opening Day and the Seldon Park film night, and urged residents to review job postings for seasonal positions on the county website.
