The Marion County School Board reviewed and approved multiple construction and procurement items on March 24, including informational change orders, a renewal for heavy truck and bus parts, and authorization to use cooperative contracts to purchase furniture for upcoming school openings.
Staff reported several deductive change orders associated with owner-direct purchases (ODP) that reduce guaranteed maximum price (GMP) contract amounts. Examples cited include a deductive change order of $99,835.19 for the Emma Booker Center cooler/freezer addition (project 25-111), $137,833.74 for Nolan Middle School (project 25-112), and $378,586.45 for Howard Academy (project 25-113). Staff said these ODP actions could save the district estimated sales-tax amounts on the orders.
Mr. Rios Welsh, chief financial officer, presented procurement items: renewal of bid 3975MF for OEM heavy truck and bus parts — an up-to $500,000 term contract through April 30, 2027 — and a plan to utilize the TIPS contract (230301) and Florida alternate contract (5612000-24-NY-ECS) to procure furniture and fixtures for South Marion High School, East Marion Elementary, and Osceola Middle School. He described the $3.2 million figure as an "up to" capital allocation to ensure furnishings and equipment are available when those schools open.
Board members noted operational needs — for example, desks and other classroom furniture for South Marion High School — and referenced enrollment estimates (staff cited about 1,800 students signed up). The board approved the renewals and contract authorizations by voice vote, 4–0.
The board also acknowledged smaller deductive and additive change-order items (unused funds returns and a small $34.06 additive for a canopy extension at the central warehouse) that close project accounting lines.
