Encinitas senior commission keeps guest speakers, intergenerational programs and senior transit on 2026–27 work plan; age‑friendly report to be shared later

The Encinitas Senior Citizen Commission spent the bulk of its March 17 meeting drafting priorities for its fiscal year 2026–27 work plan. By consensus the commission decided to keep five cross-cutting items — volunteer/city event participation, identifying guest speakers, researching best practices for adults 50+, intergenerational programming with the youth commission, and promotion/marketing for adults 50+ — and to retain the annual Senior Citizen Service Award as a standing item.
Commissioners asked staff to mark grant-seeking (work-plan item 7) with a question mark and revisit it next month because the commission’s prior grant-writing lead is no longer serving. Staff said they will continue to pursue appropriate grants for recurring needs (for example, holiday gift baskets and Vial of Life materials) and will support commissioners interested in grant-related ad hoc work.
On the Age‑Friendly initiative, staff and commissioners said the study (conducted with San Diego State University/SEAL) is near completion and grant-funded by the San Diego Foundation; the final report will be shared when available and could be forwarded to city council. Staff clarified that the Age‑Friendly advisory board remains intact and that any council direction could expand commission involvement.
Commissioners supported a new staff recommendation (work-plan item 10) to explore transportation options for seniors including field-trip models and potential funding to operate a program vehicle. Staff noted the city already owns a van used for senior lunch pickups, and that grant funding could cover additional field-trip activities.
The commission also set near-term procedural steps: staff will draft a working FY2026–27 plan for the commission to review at the April meeting; commissioners will identify up to three ad hoc preferences; and the senior-award ad hoc will be staffed in time to assess nominations (the nomination deadline for the award was noted as Thursday, March 19).
