Vallejo commissioners press case for sister-city work as city surveys commission consolidations

Another commissioner said the association and volunteers help sustain many activities but that official commission status provides legitimacy and continuity that a private association alone may not.
Staff explained the background: a consultant’s assessment (originally prepared in March 2024 and revised in August 2025) recommended eliminating some commissions; when council raised questions about the recommendation, city management was directed to solicit direct feedback from affected commissions. That is the purpose of the current set of questions commissioners discussed. Staff declined to offer an opinion on whether the commission should be eliminated during the public session.
Commissioners offered several suggestions to strengthen the commission’s effectiveness if it remains: clearer annual goals, more regular presentation to council (a semiannual update was suggested), stronger collaboration with other local organizations (Chamber, Visit Vallejo, Greater Vallejo Recreation District), budgeting for outreach and conferences and more city staff participation in commission-led delegations.
What’s next: Staff will compile commissioners’ feedback and forward it to the city manager and council for consideration; the commission will present its approved work plan and budget to council on March 3 and reconvene March 16 at 5:30 p.m.
