VCUSD outlines free summer and expanded-learning programs; city and GVRD discuss partnerships

The Vallejo district presented details of its summer and expanded-learning offerings and committee members discussed ways the city and Greater Vallejo Recreation District might partner to broaden access.
The superintendent said expanded-learning programs will run roughly June 15–26 at sites proposed for Stephen Manor, Dan Mini and Federal Terrace with daily meals, academics and enrichment including STEAM and social-emotional lessons. High-school summer school is scheduled June 16–July 17 and extended‑school‑year special-education services are planned June 16–July 13. "We currently serve over 2,000 students in that program," the superintendent said.
Victoria Grace Barksdale, Vallejo’s youth coordinator, described youth delegation travel to the National League of Cities and noted the city plans to present a $300,000 Measure P funding allocation to the GVRD board to support youth scholarships and free park days; GVRD staff said they will report back before a city grant agreement is finalized in April.
Mayor Storrs and other members discussed informal, drop-in activities to fill gaps—late-night basketball has proved popular and leaders floated ideas to add other open-sports opportunities on weekends. The superintendent also said early discussions are underway with local maritime partners to develop summer internship pathways for older students.
Officials said the programs are free to families; district staff said capacity will be maximized but could not provide exact enrollment limits in the meeting. Committee members requested further updates and coordination across agencies to expand offerings and to identify funding and facility supports.
