Council liaison: cleanups paused, navigation-center beds and sheriff augmentation to support Vallejo residents

The City Council liaison updated the Economic Development Commission on Jan. 14 that the council voted to pause camping cleanups through Feb. 15 to allow a point-in-time count that could unlock state and federal funding for homeless services. “Where we landed was pausing those cleanups, through February 15, and requesting that the city staff present a plan to engage in more sustained outreach and to resume cleanups shortly thereafter,” the liaison said.

The liaison also reported a council-approved contract to make navigation-center beds available for extreme-weather situations and noted that sheriff augmentation will begin around Jan. 17 to support the Vallejo Police Department. The liaison framed those steps as preparatory to focusing on economic development priorities this year: “It’s a big year for economic development,” the liaison said, and invited commissioners to present their work‑plan updates at a March special meeting with council.

The liaison’s remarks came amid EDC discussion about business retention and a Shop Local campaign; commissioners said they look to concurrent public‑safety and street‑repair measures to make business recruitment and retention efforts more effective. The liaison said council has already made significant public‑safety investments and that staff will continue coordination across departments on outreach and sheltering strategies.

Next steps noted by the liaison include staff presenting a plan for sustained outreach and a timeline for resuming cleanups after Feb. 15, continued coordination on navigation‑center capacity for extreme weather, and scheduling the EDC to brief council in early March.
