Vallejo arts commission swears in new commissioner and welcomes interim economic development director

The Vallejo Commission on Culture and the Arts swore in Justin Colonia and reappointed Monique Schaeffer at its Jan. 26 meeting and introduced interim Economic Development Director Brad Paul.
Justin Colonia took the oath of office and told commissioners he was born and raised in Vallejo and works with VISTA Vallejo, helping to organize local events and partner with hotels, restaurants and small businesses. "I'm really honored to be a part of this commission," Colonia said, adding that he wants to help pass Vallejo experience to future generations.
Monique Schaeffer was re-sworn and briefly described her background in technology and digital arts. Chair Daniel Weiss welcomed both commissioners and asked each commissioner to introduce themselves so the new members could get to know the body.
Brad Paul, introduced by the commission secretary as the city’s interim economic development director, described a long Bay Area career in redevelopment and arts preservation and said he sees arts and culture as a driver of downtown economic activity. "I consider arts and culture as much a part of economic development as public safety," Paul said, noting local assets such as the Empress Theatre and downtown merchants.
The commission noted administrative items including a special early-March council meeting where commissions may present high-level work plans and any budget asks. The commission set its next regular meeting for Feb. 23, 2026.
