The Economic Development Commission set a workforce presentation for its May meeting and agreed to ask the City Council for an extension to the council‑requested industry recruitment report.
Staff told the commission Solano Workforce Development would present on May 13 to help the EDC ground its recommendations about attracting construction, advanced manufacturing, software, film and related industries. The commission noted council asked for a report within 75 days following a Feb. 24 request (staff indicated the council deadline equated to May 10). Vice Chair Garcia and Commissioner Harrell said the commission lacked capacity and a full subcommittee to prepare a thoughtful response by that date; they recommended requesting an extension and using the May presentation to assemble a short deliverable or a longer report if council allows more time.
A public commenter, Melvin Cohen of Enough Housing, urged the commission to align workforce development, infrastructure investment and housing supply to build industry clusters and long‑term local employment opportunities. "Cities that succeed in attracting these sectors usually focus on building those conditions rather than pursuing individual companies," Cohen said.
The commission asked staff to communicate with the liaison and request a reasonable extension so commissioners can leverage the workforce presentation to prepare actionable recommendations.
