Beautification commissioners ask city to proclaim April as National Volunteer Month

The Vallejo Beautification Commission voted unanimously April 1 to ask the city council to proclaim April as National Volunteer Month in 2027 and directed the chair to submit a supporting letter to the mayor's office.

The commission approved a motion to advocate for the proclamation after Secretary (staff) told commissioners the city needs several months to place proclamations on the council agenda. "We just need a letter to send it to the mayor's office, and then it would proceed from there," the Secretary said, explaining that the commission’s chair would present a draft proclamation for the council's review.

Commissioners emphasized that the national recognition would not replace the commission’s existing volunteer appreciation event, which the Secretary said remains scheduled in October. "This is just a way for the city to formally recognize the contribution of the many volunteer groups," the Secretary said.

During discussion commissioners asked who would draft the letter; the Secretary said staff would prepare the proclamation and the chair would transmit the recommendation for approval at a subsequent meeting. After the motion and second, the commission took a roll-call vote and the motion carried unanimously.

The commission also noted that outreach and volunteer recruitment could leverage the city’s volunteer portal and planned events; the Secretary encouraged drafting the proclamation as part of broader efforts to publicize volunteer opportunities.
