WALDWICK — The Borough Council honored Jim Lachland as Waldwick's 2025 Citizen of the Year, recognizing his work over decades to improve accessibility and inclusion in the borough.
Mayor Gerardano recounted Lachland's life — including his move to Waldwick in 1976, his rehabilitation after a 2002 accident and the independence he gained with the aid of a service dog — and said Lachland had worked with borough administrators, the Bergen County Department of Planning and Engineering, and New Jersey Transit accessibility officials to advocate for ADA‑compliant pedestrian signals, inclusive playground renovations at Ted Bell Park and Lions Club facilities, and accessibility improvements at the Waldwick train station. The mayor said Lachland founded a local advocacy organization in 2018 and has helped the borough on several civic projects.
Lachland accepted thanks from the council and residents in attendance. The mayor noted it was his honor to present the award and encouraged continued community engagement.
