Hackensack swears in two fire officers; city to host food‑pantry opening and gallery reception

The City Council on Jan. 6 administered promotion oaths to Aaron Hillyard, who was sworn in as fire captain, and Thomas Kavanagh, sworn in as fire lieutenant. Council members congratulated both officers and paused the meeting for photos.
City Manager Freeman also announced two community events: on Jan. 9, high‑school student Sylvia Brown will launch a Girl Scout Gold Award mini food pantry at 116 Holt Street for residents to “take what you need, give what you can,” and the Hackensack Performing Arts Center gallery was officially named the Ruth Bower Newatter Gallery, with an opening reception on Jan. 9 and an exhibition running through Jan. 31.
Council members encouraged residents to attend the gallery opening and the food pantry ribbon‑cutting and thanked municipal departments for storm‑response work during recent snowfall.
