The chief told commissioners that property crime accounted for a large share of calls in 2025, with 405 cases reported — an 11% increase from 2024 — and that breaking-and-entering rose sharply from 32 cases in 2024 to 60 in 2025. He pointed to a 75% increase in shoplifting to 63 incidents, calling that "a growing challenge for retail business and law enforcement." The department also recorded a small increase in assault cases (56 in 2025) and an increase in rape reports to four cases.
Tavisome said domestic-disturbance calls have declined over the four-year period, dropping from 187 in 2023 to 134 in 2025, and suggested that improved community resources and new protective-order laws may be factors. On sexual-assault and rape reports he cautioned that the numbers are initial call-ins and may not reflect adjudicated findings: "these numbers do not reflect adjudicated numbers — they are calls that we've investigated," he said.
Commissioners asked about substance-use trends and interdiction. The chief said methamphetamine remains prevalent and is a major driver of thefts; fentanyl overdose calls have decreased from earlier peaks. He also said changes to federal prosecutorial thresholds mean fewer drug cases are taken by federal partners and more fall to local law enforcement and prosecutors.
The presentation included department data on traffic enforcement (roughly 2,920 stops in 2025 and about 1,648 citations) and programmatic steps such as registering privately owned security cameras to assist investigations. Chief Tavisome urged continued investment in victim support services, prevention and investigative resources.
The commission did not take formal action on the presentation; commissioners asked follow-up questions about trends and interagency cooperation. The chief stood for questions and said the department will continue to monitor trends and adjust enforcement and prevention efforts.
