Winchester — The Historic Commission gave selectmen an update on CT250 planning on March 2, outlining completed grant work, an active website and a schedule of commemorative events for the town’s 250th observance of the Declaration of Independence.
A commission member said the CT250 website is now live, grant-funded historic signs are fabricated and the commission is coordinating placements with property owners. The commission noted a DEEC-funded signage grant and said Tom Hushell is working on siting details.
Planned events include a March 7 Rosie the Riveter display at the Museum of Port Law, a March 21 presentation on the Radium Girls at Beardsley Library, an April 18 volunteer day to refurbish Revolutionary War gravestones, an April 26 presentation on women in the Revolutionary War at the American Mural Project, and a tentative May 23 veterans memorial service at the First Church of Winstead pending invitations.
The commission also described longer-term ideas: high-watermark plaques on Main Street commemorating the 1955 flood, interpretive trails connecting historic sites and the Mad River legacy-building assessment (the latter being coordinated with the town’s broader redevelopment work). The commission asked selectmen to consider future requests for siting monuments and support for outreach and volunteer coordination.
