Commissioners favor reliability over lower bid, moving to renew elevator-maintenance contract

Union County commissioners discussed whether to renew an elevator maintenance contract with the current provider (TKE) or switch to a lower-cost bid (Phoenix). Staff member Angie briefed the board on vendor differences and recommended staying with the incumbent because the contract includes coverage for motor brushes, operational switches and most fuses and the vendor provides rapid on-site response.
Angie described the tradeoffs: the lower bid did not include certain parts and would likely require additional service charges for replacements; TKE’s contract covers commonly failing parts and the company has a track record of immediate response, which county officials said is important to keep courthouse operations running. "If our elevator goes down and we call for repair with TKE, they come immediately," the presenter said during the briefing.
A commissioner moved to accept the TKE contract; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners said reliability and minimizing courthouse downtime justified accepting the higher-priced contract.
The motion authorizes county staff to renew the contract with the incumbent vendor and to finalize contract terms as discussed.
