Board approves nicotine-related policy updates; first reading held for wireless-device policy

The board reviewed and approved a package of policy updates (policy advisories 253–260). The changes primarily add "nicotine" to lists of prohibited items across volunteer, student-conduct and facility-use policies, delete an outdated tobacco-use policy for students, and align references across related exhibits and regulations. Superintendent Viviano recommended approval of each advisory and the board approved them by voice votes.
Separately, staff presented the first read of proposed policy JICDA (wireless communication device use). The draft broadens the existing cellphone policy to cover wireless devices, incorporates statutory language required by the state's anti-distraction law and defines instructional time. The draft preserves exemptions for medical necessity and accommodations under IEP or Section 504 plans and proposes differentiated rules for elementary/middle school versus high school use. A revised draft will be circulated before the July second read.
