Pearland outlines traffic-signal upgrades, AI detection rollout and sidewalk gap progress

City staff briefed council on transportation operations and sidewalk programs during the CIP update. Yosi Ramirez and Mario Telles described the traffic division’s workload—115 traffic signals, roughly 400 street lights, and 46 school zone flashers—and said the city is expanding a camera-and-radar detection system that currently covers 23 intersections to 41 by year’s end to improve signal performance and data collection.
The traffic division also reported ongoing traffic calming work: staff processed 77 traffic calming requests this year and denied 20 per the city’s traffic calming policy; data collection and police speed feedback radars are used to evaluate requests prior to committee decisions.
On sidewalks, staff said the 2023 bond allocated $15 million over five years and the city has invested about $10.6 million to date, closing more than 2,000 sidewalk repair work orders and replacing roughly 23 miles of sidewalks. The city will prioritize remaining gap work near schools and parks; staff also noted an HGAC grant application for Safe Routes to Schools Connectivity Phase Two had been submitted for federal/regional funding consideration.
Council members asked staff to monitor signal timing in several problem locations during construction and to provide traffic-calming and sidewalk study reports on request; staff agreed to follow up with specific intersection timing analyses and to provide memos on sidewalk gap progress.
