New public-works technician approved; lodging tax to fund position

Gilpin County commissioners voted unanimously to create a new public-works position—lube, brake and tire technician—designed to improve fleet maintenance for the county's roughly 104 vehicles. Public works director John Combmes described the position as the result of recommendation from a prior operations study and as a role that would let mechanics focus on more technical repairs.
Combmes and human-resources director Shanda Johnson told the board the position will be funded through a transfer of lodging-tax revenue approved by voters. About one-third of projected lodging-tax revenue in the county’s budget package will support the new position in the first year, with the remaining lodging-tax revenue supporting other capital projects named in the budget. Commissioners asked whether overtime would be charged to the public-works fund if required for major storms; staff confirmed that overtime exists in the public-works fund and would be used when necessary.
The board approved Resolution 26-026 to create the position and begin recruitment April 1; the motion passed 3-0. Commissioners urged a prompt hiring process because of maintenance needs and the benefits to fleet efficiency.
